Seventeen

I stood in the foyer, the door shut and locked behind me. Gulliver’s bark rang out from the master suite. I heard Leonie object to the noise.

When Gulliver bounced into the room I gave him his due greeting and let him lead me back to Leonie.

“Hello darling, how was the sleuthing? Gulliver and I had a lovely night. Nat Geo ran a Koala Kingdom marathon. He seemed quite interested. I wouldn’t have thought a dog would pay attention to television.”

“Yeah, I usually leave Animal Planet on for him when he has to stay home alone.”

“I’m tired of talking darling. Goodnight. Before I forget, you have things to attend to in the yard. Tomorrow?”

“First thing.”

I retreated down the hallway to my own room, Gulliver frisking ahead. The air conditioner was silent, the slight chill in the house was seeping in from outside. My bed was unkempt. Gulliver didn’t mind. He jumped up and sprawled out, tongue lolling happily from the side of his mouth. I tried to coax him down so I could return the bedding to a smoother, more comfortable state, but he would not be persuaded. Gulliver is not a dog that has to be bribed with a biscuit to perform every little sit or stay, but love of me was not budging him.

“Come on,” I whined. I am thoroughly against such behavior in theory, but I was tired and frustrated. In general, not sexually. I sighed. Not just sexually. I tried some A.T.

“Gulliver you are being selfish. There is room for both of us, if you let me straighten everything. But you can’t sleep in the middle.”

He was unimpressed. I tried to push him off the bed. I tried to pull the covers out from under him. I decided that my next dog was going to be a tribble.

Perhaps something in the kitchen could be the irresistible force to shift immovable Gulliver. I foraged in the refrigerator and came back with a chunk of Brie. Lest anyone think my dog is spoiled, it was not heated. Gulliver snapped to attention. A string of drool eased from his jowls; it stretched all the way down to the bed, to my relief missing my pillow.

I waved the cheese. Gulliver charged and I tossed it out the bedroom door and shut it smartly behind him. I made the bed, and didn’t let him back in until I’d washed my face and brushed my teeth. We finally settled equitably, and comfortably.

I fell asleep with the kiss playing over and over in my head. I didn’t embellish once.
